Douglass, a Negro slave, learned to read and write while still a child. In 1838 he escaped from Baltimore and went to Massachusetts, where he became prominent in the Anti-Slavery Society. He made speeches and lectures about on the evils of slavery. In 1845 he published his Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.Douglass lived with his maternal grandmother until the age of seven, when he moved to the Wye House plantation run by Aaron Anthony, whom Douglass suspected could be his father. When Anthony died, Douglass was sent to Hugh and Sophia Auld in Baltimore. Sophia Auld began Douglass’s initial education, teaching him the alphabet.About. Transcript.
